About Sunset Park
Sunset Park is a Clark County recreational area located at Sunset Road and Eastern Avenue. The park has large shade trees, but the temperatures will be similar to the rest of the Las Vegas Valley. Although it is a public park, it is recommended that you call ahead when planning a field trip. The number to call is 455-8200.

A man-made lake is located near the center of Sunset Park. A wide variety of birds, trees, bushes and other native plants live in and around the lake. Cottonwood trees provide shelter for migrating birds. Because of the large man-made lake and the vegetation it supports, mallard ducks live in the park. Other kinds of birds have also taken advantage of the water and plants available in the park. Duck

There is a natural desert environment to the south of the undeveloped area. Sand dunes are found here. The dunes are formed as blowing sand is trapped by desert vegetation such as mesquite. You will find evidence of animal life in and around the dunes.

Sunset Park provides an opportunity for students to look at the effect of water on the desert environment. By observing, surveying and comparing plant and animal life in and around the lake area and the natural desert area, students may come to some understanding about the interrelationships between organisms and their environments.

Objectives- CCSD Curriculum Essentials Framework Fifth Grade
Science students will be able to:
(5) 2.6 Investigate and describe how some environmental conditions are more favorable than others to living things [NS 7.5.3]
(5) 2.12 Investigate and describe how environmental changes allow some plants and animals to survive and reproduce, but others may die [NS 9.5.2]
(5) 2.13 Investigate and describe how individuals of the same kind differ in their characteristics and sometimes the differences give an advantage in surviving and reproducing [NS 9.5.3]
(5) 4.1 Investigate and describe interrelationships and interdependence of organisms with each other and with the non-living parts of their habitats [NS 15.5.1]
(5) 4.2 Investigate and describe how, for any particular environment, some kinds of plants and animals survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all [NS 15.5.2]
(5) 4.3 Explain how the sun is the primary source of energy for nearly every ecosystem and that living things get what they need to survive form their environments [NS 15.5.3]
(5) 4.4 Investigate and describe how the local ecosystem has unique characteristics
[NS 15.5.4]
