About the museum

Sign at the entrance off of Boulder Hwy.The Clark County Museum is a site administered by the Clark County Department of Parks and Recreation Cultural Division. The museum is located at 1830 S. Boulder Highway in the city of Henderson, east of the I-515. A "County Museum" sign along the freeway directs visitors to exit at Wagon Wheel Drive.

Visitors should dress for the season as some exhibits are outdoors. Spring and fall are popular times for visits, but the museum is available for use year-round. A small entrance fee is charged per person for field trips. Reservations should be made at least four weeks in advance by calling 455-7955. The museum mails an advance packet, including a museum pass for field trip preparation visit, to each teacher bringing a class to the museum.

EntranceThe site includes an 8,000 square foot exhibit center building, a resurrected ghost town, a historic railroad depot and authentic railroad rolling stock, and a unique collection of relocated historic homes along its Heritage Street. Throughout the exhibit, one can follow the importance of water to life in the Southwest and its impact on the location of settlements, including Las Vegas.

The ghost town provides a glimpse into life in an early mining or ranching community at a time when water and other basic amenities were less available. The railroad exhibits include a 1918 Union Pacific steam engine. Railroads were very dependent on water to use in steam engines, so once again, water influenced the location of growing communities.

Heritage Street allows a "time-capsule" trip back to domestic life during the first half of the 20th century. There are five homes along this street. The earliest home exhibits outdoor plumbing except for a pitcher pump located at the kitchen sink. By the 1950s, indoor plumbing included a combination shower-bath, a double sink in the kitchen and a "modern" washing machine.
