Rafael Rivera
Rafael Rivera was a scout. He would travel
with large groups of people and find water and food while the others camped.
During a trip in 1829,
he got lost. But, Rivera found Las Vegas.
He finally found his group and showed them the place
he found. They named the area "Las
Vegas," which is Spanish for "the meadows."
You can see a statue of Rivera at the Rafael Rivera
Community Center in downtown Las Vegas. The center is at 2900 Stewart
Ave.
