The 2006-2007 Youth Advisory Council (YAC) decided to encourage water conservation through a student recycling program that both instilled environmental ethics and called on Southern Nevadans to provide a sustainable water supply for future generations.
Community Partners
For their community project, the students partnered with Rick Madsen, Las Vegas Area Manager for Abitibi Paper Retriever Company and with Bridget Bilbray-Phillips, Director of the Clark County School District (CCSD)-Community Partnership Program.
In order to revive existing unsuccessful recycling programs and in most cases, to initiate a program from scratch, the council provided designated bins to each of the participating high schools. They also rallied for policy change by drafting a revised recycling policy which was presented for consideration to the Clark County School District superintendent.
To spread their newfound conservation knowledge, the council organized a gala revolving around a showing of the movie "Running Dry," the inspiration for the final project. In collaboration with local artist Denise Duarte, the council designed the art decorating a sitting wall in the children's play area of the Springs Preserve, leaving an indelible mark on the community.
Recommendations
The group recommended that the SNWA maintain its relationship with the youth of Southern Nevada and the Clark County School District and work together to enhance environmental education in our schools. View the full report. (PDF)
