The 2004-2005 Youth Advisory Council (YAC) focused their efforts on water-saving landscape conversions.
The council helped a local family convert their yard to a kid- and pet-friendly xeriscape. The students wanted to demonstrate how the family could live within the surrounding desert environment instead of trying to change the environment to suit their needs.
Community Partners
To assist in the conversion, the students solicited help from a variety of community partners, including:
- MS Concrete
- Nevada Ready Mix
- Rainbow Rock
- Star Nursery
|
- Turner Greenhouse
- Lowe's
- Custom Ornamental Iron
- Aquarius Stone Products
|
Day with the Experts
The council also participated in SNWA's annual Day with the Experts. The students prepared two displays to help illustrate water conservation and discussed the benefits of water-smart landscaping.
Recommendations
The group recommended a new landscape design for pool owners. The students developed the landscape design, "Desert Splash - Pool-Friendly Landscape" and used it to convert the back yard of the selected home.
