Youth Advisory Council 2003 - 2004
The 2003-2004 Youth Advisory Council (YAC) focused
their efforts on water conservation, particularly reducing outdoor water
use.
The students learned that the majority of residential
water use is outdoors and that this water cannot be recovered. Their goal
became communicating the importance of outdoor water conservation through
water-efficient landscaping.
Partnering with Pulte Homes
The YAC partnered with Pulte
Homes to create a "Water Smart Home" that would demonstrate
water-efficient features. The home, located in the Escala development
in Summerlin, showcased water-efficient landscaping and indoor fixtures.
Building success
The students worked with the developers during the design phase. They
also helped design and install the landscape. The YAC welcomed visitors
at the home's opening in February 2004. About 500 people toured the home,
which will save 115,000 gallons of water per year.
Recommendations
The YAC recommended the SNWA implement a "Water
Smart Home" program. They suggested using a water drop recognition
symbol in new homes to identify a water smart
home, similar the to the "Energy Star" concept.
The students also recommended that the program include
incentives for builders who make their communities and homes eligible
for the water smart designation. SNWA is currently developing a Water
Smart Homes program.
