Youth
Advisory Council 2002 - 2003
The 2002-2003 Youth
Advisory Council (YAC) made it their goal to reduce outdoor water use
30 percent by 2010. They recognized that a majority of the valley's drinking
water is used on outdoor landscaping, and much of that water is lost to
waste.
The students brainstormed ways to target the largest
residential users of water in the valley. They coordinated a special event,
called "Breakfast in the Gardens with the Youth Advisory Council,"
to educate local residents about outdoor conservation.
They also set up a booth at the 2002 Day with the Experts
at the Gardens, where they shared water conservation information with
consumers and peformed a skit about the misconceptions of xeriscape.
The students learned that their target audience was difficult
to reach, even with tempting raffle prizes. According to their report
to the SNWA Board of Directors, high-water-users often have unique characteristics
and are disengaged when it comes to water issues. Because they found this
target audience difficult to reach, the group recommended the Water Authority
increase efforts to reach people in high-water-use communities.
