Leak Seeker
There may be hidden water wasters in your home! Help save water by checking your house for leaks. Some leaks can easily be seen, but many leaks are hidden and can waste more than 100 gallons of water per day!

You will need:
  • Food coloring or colored punch
Check indoors for a leak:

Check the kitchen and bathroom faucets for leaks. Listen for a drip, drip, drip sound. If you hear a drip, try tightening the handle of the faucet in the off position. If the faucet continues to leak, tell an adult so they can fix it.

Check the toilet for leaks. Remove the lid from the tank of the toilet. Ask an adult to help lift the lid because it's a little heavy.

  • Pour food coloring or punch in the tank of the toilet.
  • Do not flush.
  • Wait 15 minutes and then check your toilet bowl.
  • If the water is clear, you do not have a leak. If the water is colored, then you do have a leak. Tell an adult and have them check the toilet flapper.
No leak Leak
Check outdoors for a leak:
  1. Check the garden hose. Is it leaking? Try tightening the spigot handle in the off position. Use a nozzle on the hose to save water.
  2. Check the sprinklers in your grass. Is water running out of them even though they're closed and not on? Does water shoot up into the sky when they're on? Does water run off the grass and onto the sidewalk? Tell an adult that the sprinklers need to be fixed. Water wasted outside means less drinking water for us.
Making Discoveries:
  • Ask an adult to order a free water audit kit so you can test your faucets to make sure they don't use too much water.
