Where did the water go?
When water is in the sun, it begins to disappear. When this happens, it is actually called evaporation. Evaporation occurs when the sun's heat takes the moisture and turns it into vapor. Try this experiment and you can see evaporation for yourself.

You're going to go outside for this experiment so make sure you tell your parents or a teacher. You will be painting pictures with water. Take a notebook with you to record what you learn.

You will need:
  • A bowl of water
  • A sunny patch of sidewalk
  • A shady patch of sidewalk
  • Bowl of WaterNotebook
  • Watch or timer
Begin the experiment:
  1. Head outside with your materials and find an area of sidewalk that has both sunny and shady parts.
  2. Once you've found a sunny patch of sidewalk, take the pan of water and dip your hand in it.
  3. Press your hand on the sidewalk to leave a wet handprint. Time how long it takes to disappear.
  4. Now head to a shady patch of the sidewalk and make a water handprint there.
  5. Time how long it takes to disappear.
Your handprints on the sidewalk
Making discoveries:
  • Did one handprint last longer than the other?
  • When the water disappears, it has evaporated. That means the water has changed its form from liquid to vapor.
  • Do you think anything else could affect how quickly the water evaporates?
  • Record what you learned.
  • Now that you have seen water disappear, share your knowledge of evaporation with your friends and family.
