Mt. CharlestonMount Charleston
Can you see Mount Charleston from where you are? It's the tall mountain northwest of Las Vegas. It makes up the highest part of the Spring Mountains.

Water from the mountains
In the winter you can see the mountain covered in snow. In the spring, the snow melts and becomes water. Some of the water makes little rivers. Some of the water runs down the side of the mountain creating a waterfall. Some of the water seeps into the ground.

Watershed Interactive

Far underground, the water moves very slowly toward Las Vegas. After hundreds and even thousands of years, the water reaches underground aquifers in the Las Vegas Valley. We use this water for some of our drinking water.

Kyle Canyon or Kiel Canyon?
In the 1800s, Conrad Kiel settled in the Las Vegas Valley near Octavius Decatur Gass and the Old Mormon Fort. Kiel built his ranch on a spot called the "Indian Farm" about two miles from Gass' ranch. He also built a sawmill near Mt. Charleston in what is now called Kyle Canyon. (The people who first made maps of the area changed the spelling of his name from "Kiel" to "Kyle."
