Water on Earth

  • Almost 80 percent of the Earth's surface is covered with water.

  • There are 362 trillion gallons of water on Earth.

  • About 3 percent of all the water on Earth is freshwater. But only 1 percent is freshwater we can use for drinking, bathing and other purposes.

  • The other 2 percent of the freshwater is glacier ice at the North and South Poles. It is frozen and too far away from where people live to be able to use it.

  • About 97 percent of the water on Earth is saltwater. We cannot drink this water. It's very difficult and expensive to remove the salt.

  • Without water, the Earth would look like the moon!
