Dishwashers Washing Dishes
  • Using the dishwasher can save more water than washing the dishes by hand.
  • Washing dishes by hand uses about 20 gallons of water, while a diswasher uses between 12 and 20 gallons.
  • Only run the dishwasher when it's full.
  • If you don't have a dishwasher, try filling your sink with water for rinsing so you don't leave the faucet running.
Faucets Shut off when you brush
  • Faucets use 5.6 percent of the water used in your home.
  • Shut off the faucet when you brush your teeth. Leaving the water running uses about 5 gallons of water!
  • If you see a leaky faucet, tell someone so it can get fixed. Leaky faucets can waste about 1 gallon of water a day!
  • Tell your family to install an aerator (air-ate-or) on your faucets. Aerators save water.
  • About 4,000 gallons of water comes out of your faucets every year.
Washing Machines Wash full loads of laundry
  • Only wash full loads of laundry to save both water and energy.
  • Washing only full loads in your washing machine and your dishwasher can save up to 2,000 gallons of water a year.
  • Adjust the water level setting if your washer has one. Some loads take less water than others.
